Pregnancy weight gain, how it affects the size of your baby

Most women do not like to gain weight. And, for the most part, gaining weight may not be a healthy thing to do. There is one time, however, when gaining weight, especially the right amount of weight, is essential: during pregnancy. This article will discuss pregnancy weight gain and how it affects the size of a woman’s baby.

Why gain weight?

Gaining weight during pregnancy is the healthy thing to do. The extra weight is needed for many things to help a woman’s changing body and especially to help the growing baby. The extra weight nourishes the baby and helps a mother produce milk after the baby is born.

Where does it go?

All of the extra weight that a woman gains during pregnancy is not fat. The baby accounts for some of the weight; around seven to eight pounds of it near the end of the pregnancy. And the placenta, amniotic fluid, the uterus, and the woman’s enlarged breasts account for around one to two pounds each, of the added weight. Blood and other fluids add up to around eight pounds of the extra weight, and the woman will have around seven pounds of fat storage for nutrients.

How much to gain

The amount of total weight gain does, and should, vary from woman to woman. A proper weight gain helps the mother to remain healthy during and after pregnancy, as well as ensures the best outcome for the infant as well. If a woman was a healthy weight before she became pregnant she should gain around 25 to 37 pounds. If she was underweight before pregnancy she should gain somewhere between 28 to 40 pounds. If a woman was overweight before she conceived, she should keep her weight gain between 15 to 25 pounds.

What happens if you don’t gain enough?

If a woman does not gain weight through out her pregnancy, or loses weight while she is pregnant, her baby could be in danger. The nutrients that a mother consumes and stores during her pregnancy, feeds her baby. If she does not have enough nutrients to feed her baby, the infant may become malnourished during the woman’s pregnancy. A woman who does not gain enough weight could have a premature delivery or a low-birth weight infant. These babies have a more difficult time surviving and may be small for their gestational age.

Some woman may lose weight at the very beginning of their pregnancy because of morning sickness. This is not too much of a concern since the baby does not need quite as many calories as later on during the pregnancy. However, it is important that the woman begins to gain weight at a steady pace throughout the remaining months of her pregnancy.

What happens if you gain too much?

If a pregnant woman gains too much weight during her pregnancy it is possible that both she and her baby will develop and experience problems. Some of the problems that a pregnant woman may experience if she gains too much weight during pregnancy will affect her infant. One such problem is gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes can cause a woman to have a very large baby. This can cause a difficult vaginal delivery, which many times will result in a cesarean delivery.

Pregnancy nutrition guidelines

A pregnant woman’s nutrition is important to consider because it directly influences the course of the pregnancy and normal fetal development. It also affects the long-term health of the mother and child.  However, many people are confused about pregnancy nutrition. The following should clear up many of the common concerns.

First, in the first half of pregnancy, nutrition requirements mainly concern quality, or in other words, what you are eating. In the second half, quantity is also an issue, to ensure fetal growth.

If possible, practice good nutritional habits before you get pregnant.

Energy and nutritional requirements: A pregnant woman must eat more when pregnant because their body is subject to greater demands to ensure fetal development as well as the growth, health and functioning of the uterus, placenta and amniotic fluid. However, eating for two is not quite accurate. Instead, try and get about 150 calories more each day at the start of pregnancy, and an extra 250 calories a day by the end of pregnancy. This really boils down to drinking an extra glass of milk or juice, and adding some fruit or toast to a meal. If you find you are gaining too much weight during your pregnancy, chances are you are over eating a little. The expected weight gain during pregnancy is 25-30 pounds.

Many experts recommend an additional 10 g (1/3 ounce) of protein a day during the entire pregnancy in order to help build up, maintain, and regenerate body tissue in both the fetus and mother.

Because glucose is the main source of energy used by the fetus during pregnancy, it is recommended that pregnant women get plenty of carbohydrates during their pregnancy, such as bread, pasta, and fruit.

It is also important that pregnant women get plenty of fats during pregnancy, as the essential fatty acids are critical for the development and functioning of the baby’s nervous system.

Minerals and vitamins: If you eat a balanced diet, you should be getting most of the vitamins and minerals needed when pregnant, however, it is good to pay attention to the amount of calcium, iron, and folic acid you get, as they are needed for proper fetal development. Let’s take a closer look at these three:

Calcium: During pregnancy, a lot of calcium goes to the fetus to help form bones, teeth, etc. It is really important that pregnant women get enough, as in the first six months, the mother stores up calcium in her bones. Then when the baby’s skeletal growth reaches its peak in the last three months, the fetus draws on the mother’s store. If the mother is calcium deficient, this can result in damage to her teeth, and her bones becoming brittle.

Iron: Iron is essential for blood formation, and since the mother’s blood volume increases significantly when pregnant, and since the fetal red blood cells have to be developed, it is critical that there is enough iron to allow for this. To get iron, eat meat, fish, egg yolk, whole-grain products, and vegetables.

Folic acid: This is a critical vitamin as it is needed for the development of the fetal central nervous system and having sufficient amounts prevent developmental defects of the neural tube (spina bifida). Most of the time it is difficult to get enough folic acid through foods, that is why a prenatal vitamin with it in it is recommended, such as vitamin B9. This is most important during the first few months, and before pregnancy, so start early with the folic acid for the best results.

What new moms need to help with recovery

Having a baby is a big ordeal. Most new moms are so excited about the prospect of getting the baby out, and having a new sweet baby to cuddle and hold, that they often overlook the necessary items they need to make recovery and after-birth comfortable. The following is a look at the things new moms need to help them with their recovery, and to make sure that things go well after having a baby:

First, they will need to have maxi-pads and panty liners. If you give birth vaginally this is especially important. You typically will bleed for several weeks after you have a baby, some days will be light, others heavy. For the first week it is typically fairly heavy bleeding, so you will want to buy a couple of boxes of ultra-absorbent maxi-pads. After the first couple of weeks or so, you will see that the lochia discharge slows, and a maxi-pad is not as necessary, and at that time, a box of panty liners will be most useful. Unless you want to send your husband out to the store for them the day you get home from the hospital, it is wise to buy these before hand as you will need them right away.

In addition to maxi-pads it would be wise to have some hemorrhoid wipes and creams as your bottom area will be sore from the tearing that may take place or an episiotomy that you may have to get. In addition to that, many women experience hemorrhoids as an aftereffect of the pushing they do during labor. It makes the blood vessels and other things come closer to the surface of the skin, and can be quite painful without some help.

Nursing pads (disposable or washable): When you have a baby your breast are going to secrete colostrum at first, and milk after a while. Even if you choose not to nurse, for at least a few weeks, your breasts may still leak, so you may need to purchase some nursing pads. If you choose to use disposable nursing pads make sure that you find some that do not have a plastic lining. Plastic makes your skin unable to breathe and possibly leads to infection and pain. Washable nursing pads are not much better as they take a lot of upkeep, and must be washed frequently. However, many people find them more comfortable.

Ice packs: If you experienced tearing during delivery, cooling ice packs will help your recovery by reducing swelling and numbing soreness. These applied with hemorrhoid pads and creams or sprays will alleviate  lot of the pain and itching that comes along with stitches and the tearing.

Breast ointment or cream: It is very normal to have chapped nipples, and experience a great deal of pain in your nipples when you first start to nurse. This is especially true if your baby has a small mouth, or is having trouble with suction, latching on, or other things. It would be wise to invest in a small tube of breast ointment or cream. This can be purchased at a local grocery store. Lansinoh is a great brand for a helpful nipple cream or breast ointment.

Travel safety tips when pregnant

Your fetus is very important, and keeping it healthy is important as well if you want to have a healthy, happy baby. Most pregnant women are careful about what they eat, they get the right tests, and they even try to get the right amount of exercise, but some neglect to consider the health of their fetus when traveling.

Travel puts a strain on the body, and can negatively affect the fetus, so to help keep the fetus safe, consider the following travel safety tips for while pregnant:

1. Consult your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider is going to know better than anyone else besides yourself if it is safe for you to travel while pregnant. They will know if your pregnancy is going to make travel risky, and will be able to tell you what precautions to take to ensure that your baby is not in danger when you travel.

2. Consider your prenatal test schedule. There are tests you should take during your pregnancy, and travel can interfere with these tests, so before traveling, be sure that you know whether or not you should be taking any tests during the time period you will be away, and plan accordingly. These tests can affect the health of your fetus.

3. Gather your medical records and vital health information. To ensure that your baby is going to be healthy and happy, it is wise to always have copies of your medical and vital health records with you when you travel. If you do not, and something were to happen, it might take some time before the doctors could get your records and offer you treatment. So, be sure to take copies, especially if you have any allergies, etc.

4. Make sure you have all the medications you need. It is always wise to take a little extra. You never know if your flight is going to be delayed, or you might get snowed in, etc. So, if you are on medications, and your baby’s health is tied to those, such as blood pressure medication, etc., then be sure to take enough and more.

5. Check your health insurance policy. Some insurance does not cover you when you travel. If that is the case, and you are pregnant, then do not go, as you could be putting your fetus at risk, or your wallet. If something were to happen, it could be very costly.

6. Check the airline’s policy about travel when pregnant. Many airlines will not permit travel after you are 36 weeks, which means if you are traveling at that time, you could get stuck at your destination, and not be allowed to come home because you are too far along. It is always better to be prepared.

If you want to be safe when traveling pregnant, just remember to listen to your body, know what to do, and where to go if you have any pregnancy complications. Keep contact information for your physician, as well as your medical records on hand, and just be smart about your choices. Do not eat foods that could be unsanitary, or participate in high risk activity.

Pregnancy Safety

Many pregnant women are unsure what they can and can’t do when pregnant in order to keep the fetus healthy. There are all sorts of rumors about what you can and can’t do, such as hair dying, painting, etc. The following are some common pregnancy safety questions, and their answers, with tips for how to stay safe when pregnant:

Is painting the nursery safe during pregnancy? Well, no one knows for sure because let’s face it, what pregnant woman wants to be part of a study to see if it is going to be harmful to the fetus to paint when pregnant? So, the answer is that it is probably safer not to as paint does contain chemicals, and can be risky. Have some else do it.

Tip: If you decide to dye your hair, paint a room, etc. anything that has potentially dangerous fumes, when you are pregnant, then be sure to follow safety precautions such as keeping windows open or a fan running to ensure good ventilation. Wear gloves so you do not get chemicals absorbed through your skin, and be sure you wash up before eating or drinking.

Is exposure to insecticides a threat during pregnancy? Again the answer to this question is that there is no real evidence either way, but the fact is that insecticides, and other chemicals are poisons, even if they are used in low levels, they could risk your fetus’s health. So, it is best to avoid contact. This means if you need to spray your home or property that you should have someone else do it, and you should probably avoid being there for a time. It is also best to use a local application to affected areas rather than just spray to spray, as the chemicals could be harmful if breathed and could cause birth defects. In addition it is wise to make sure that before you treat the area that you clear away all food, dishes, and utensils from areas to be treated, including cabinets or drawers. This is so that you do not accidentally intake any of the chemicals later. Also, if they are being used outside, be sure to turn off your AC so you do not draw the fumes into the house.

Tip: Basically when you are pregnant you want to avoid contact with chemicals of all kinds. This means wearing rubber gloves when gardening, doing your best not to breath in any noxious fumes, etc. Avoidance is again the best strategy as no one is sure what the affects upon the fetus may be.

Is secondhand smoke a threat during pregnancy? Most people already know the answer to this question, and are well aware that nonsmoking women who are regularly exposed to cigarette smoke are at an increased risk of intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, subtle deficits in learning and behavior, and, possibly, certain childhood cancers. Thus, it is wise to avoid it as best as you can, and do not smoke yourself. Chemicals in passive smoke are harmful.

Tip: Ask that no one smoke in your home, and avoid areas where many people will be smoking, even if you are not going to be smoking yourself, it can be very harmful to the baby.

Basically, if you want to be safe during pregnancy, be smart about what you expose your body to, as your unborn baby is exposed to everything you are. If you are ever in question, contact your physician and ask. It is better to be safe than sorry.
